Website development cost in India: what you actually pay for

Short answer

Website development cost in India varies widely because "a website" can mean a one-page profile or a full online store with payments and a booking system. The price depends on the number of pages, custom design, who writes the content, the features you need, and the yearly costs of the domain, hosting and maintenance. The fair way to compare is an itemised quote, not a package name.

Why do quotes vary so much?

Two businesses can ask for "a website" and get quotes that are many times apart, and both can be fair. One may be a template with your logo added; the other may be a custom design, written content, fast hosting, SEO set-up and tracking. The price follows the work.

One-time costs vs yearly costs

People often compare only the build price and forget what comes every year.

One-time:

  • Design and development
  • Content writing and photos
  • SEO and tracking set-up

Yearly or monthly:

  • Domain renewal (yourbusiness.in or .com)
  • Hosting
  • SSL certificate (often included with hosting)
  • Maintenance: updates, backups, small changes, fixing anything that breaks
  • Paid plugins or builder subscriptions, if used

Ask for the yearly costs in writing, and check that the domain is registered in your name.

Template, website builder or custom site?

  • Website builder (Wix, Shopify and similar): quick to start, monthly subscription, limited control. Good for a simple site or a small online store.
  • Template on WordPress or similar: flexible and editable, but needs updates and security care.
  • Custom-built site: designed around your business, usually the fastest and cleanest for SEO, and costs more up front.

There is no single right answer. Choose based on what you need the site to do in the next two to three years.

How to get a fair quote

  1. Write down what the site must do: get calls, WhatsApp enquiries, bookings or online sales.
  2. List the pages you need and who will provide the text and photos.
  3. Ask every company for an itemised quote covering the same items.
  4. Ask for yearly costs and the maintenance terms.
  5. Ask what SEO, speed and tracking are included (see our 10 questions to ask a website company).

A very cheap quote with no list of what's included often costs more later, in rebuilds, lost enquiries or a domain you don't own.

Is a website worth the cost?

For most businesses, yes, if it is built to bring enquiries. A website you own can rank on Google and Bing, appear in AI answers, and turn ad clicks into leads. A website nobody can find, or that is slow on a phone, is the expensive one. If you are also budgeting for search, our guide to SEO cost in India explains that side.

Frequently asked questions

Why is one website quote so much cheaper than another?

Usually because it includes less: a template instead of custom design, no content writing, no SEO set-up, or slower hosting. Compare itemised quotes.

Are there yearly costs after the website is built?

Yes. At least the domain and hosting renew every year. Maintenance and paid tools may also cost monthly or yearly.

Does a higher price mean better SEO?

Not by itself. Ask exactly which SEO items are included: titles and descriptions, schema, a sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing, speed and mobile checks.

Can I start small and add pages later?

Yes. Many businesses start with the key pages and add service pages, location pages and blog posts over time. Make sure the site is built so adding pages is easy.
